A Paddling Photography PrimerCapturing the Canoe and Kayak Experience by Wes Kisting Nothing is better or more uplifting than taking a great paddling trip. But ranking a very close second is the related experience of sifting through paddling pictures from great trips gone by. If you haven't already discovered the great joy of capturing your trips on film, you're really missing out. Most paddlers know that sharing the memories of a great trip with friends and family can be nearly as rewarding as taking the trip itself. Even so, methods for capturing images vary greatly, from sophisticated SLR cameras equipped with an arsenal of high-tech lenses, to dirt-cheap disposable cameras bought at the grocery store. Whatever you choose, there are pros and cons involved in every choice. The links in this Photography section provide an introduction to the world of photography, with special emphasis on individual needs and paddling-specific considerations. My goal is to help you think realistically and intelligently about what type of photography system will satisfy you: your tastes, your budget, your creative style, and your logistical needs. At the same time, I hope to bring you up to speed quickly and efficiently on some of the major camera questions, controversies, myths, and misperceptions you will likely encounter as you peruse the world wide web for reviews and advice.
